I needed more storage in my home and wanted something that was not only functional to store my stuff but also stylish. I had been eyeing some sideboard cabinets that cost between $450-600+, but I didn’t want to spend that much. Fortunately, I had some cabinets from Ikea that I previously purchased for $84 each and wasn’t using, so I decided to make a DIY sideboard!
Cabinets
I bought 2 floating cabinets from Ikea about 3 years ago and spray painted them black. After being stuck in my shed and moved around, the paint began chipping. So, I decided to scrape it off and start over.
I decided to use cabinet peel and stick paper instead of paint to see how it would work. First, I sprayed the cabinets with Goof Off, a pro strength remover. Seconds after applying it, I could see it start working by bubbling up, and it was so easy to scrape off.

After cleaning the cabinets, I applied the peel and stick cabinet paper to the entire cabinet, except for the back and top.
Bracket

To make sure the cabinet was sturdy, I secured a 4-hole bracket at the back of the cabinet to hold the 2 together.
**Pro tip: use two brackets to make it more secure.**
Legs
I got 6-inch black metal legs from Amazon and screwed them in to my cabinet. They gave it a modern, sleek look that I was going for!
Wood Top
I bought a pre-cut wood board from Lowes and stained it using Minwax Special Walnut and Minwax Polycrylic crystal clear topcoat to seal the top. I used zero second glue to apply the wood to the top and applied 4 small screws to ensure it didn’t shift.
**Pro tip: use clamps when applying the top to hold it in place until screws are in.**
I haven’t decided on pulls yet, so for now, this is the final look!

Nice furniture doesn’t have to cost a fortune, and this project shows that! I completed this DIY sideboard for a total of $225. Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram @designed_concept for the latest projects.
P.S. This wall is getting a makeover, and the whole look is coming soon!
