Say goodbye to dull walls and hello to a show-stopping masterpiece that adds dimension and personality.
Feature walls can be any design you choose, using different types of materials and requiring carpentry skills and a nice budget. But luckily, this wall breaks the mold. It is simple enough to complete in a day and is budget-friendly (somewhere around $150). I chose a beautiful taupe paint called Elegant Taupe by Valspar. This wall was easy to build, and I’ll be sharing the details below. So here’s to building your own DIY Modern Accent Wall!

Here is a list of everything you’ll need:
- Wood strips 1/4 x 3/4 inches
- Valspar Signature Paint – Elegant Taupe
- Brushes & rollers, or a paint sprayer
- Painters tape
- Painters plastic
- Caulk and wood filler
- Nails
- Hammer or nail gun
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Level
- Saw- table saw, jigsaw, or circular saw
- Ladder
- Craftsman Random Orbital Sander
- Damp cloth
Step 1: Measure and mark layout of the design
Once I decided on the style and layout of the design based on the amount of space of the wall, I used a level, pencil, and painters tape to mark off where the boards would lay on the wall. This allowed me to see how it would look before I started applying the boards. You can use either MDF or wood boards for your accent wall. I used wood on this wall because I wanted thinner strips to give a subtle look.
*measure twice cut once
Step 2: Nail the first piece
After measuring and cutting the first horizontal piece using a circular saw, I nailed the first board into place. Then I placed the remaining 2 horizontal boards which are the length of the wall prior to doing the vertical boards which are cut into smaller pieces.
*after cutting the board use a sanding block to smooth out the edges before applying to the wall
*these boards does not have to be nailed into the studs but wouldn’t hurt to locate and use them
Step 3: Cut the remaining boards
After applying all 3 horizontal boards I measured and cut all the vertical boards.
Step 4: Nail all vertical pieces
I started nailing all vertical pieces on the wall in their correct location by where I previously marked off. Double checking that all pieces are parallel and run in a straight vertical line.
Step 5: Fill and caulk
Using wood filler, I filled in all of the nail holes and spaces where the vertical boards meet the horizontal boards so you don’t see any gaps. Then used caulk to run along the side of the wood pieces where the wood and the wall meet.
*be sure to smooth the caulk with your finger

Step 6: Sand and Paint
After caulk and wood filler had dried, everything was sanded using my craftsman random orbital sander with 220 grit sanding disc. I sanded until it was smooth enough to run my hands across and looks seamless!
*used a damp cloth and/or a shop vac to remove any saw dust before the final step -Paint
Lastly, I taped everything off that I didn’t want painted and started painting.
